SYMP 20-7: Rehabilitation vs. restoration of urban rivers: The Menomonee Valley and the Los Angeles River as case studies

William Wenk, Wenk Associates, Inc.

The presentation will explore the dilemmas encountered when considering the rehabilitation of channelized rivers and degraded corridors in heavily urban areas.  The use of native materials to rehabilitate river corridors performing multiple functions of stormwater cleansing, recreation and open space and wildlife habitat re-establishment illustrates the trade-off that must be considered.
