TRIP CANCELLED (registered attendees will be contacted) We will travel through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and follow the White Salmon River upstream to the site of a 2008 wildfire on Mt. Adams. Affected forest types include subalpine fir and grand fir. Ongoing research is tracking responses of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants by using field measurements and remote sensing techniques. Participants will learn how national (satellite-based) fire severity classes (low, moderate, and high) compare to variation in tree mortality measured on the ground. The field trip route will provide an opportunity for participants to observe the fire severity gradient. A discussion theme will focus on research and monitoring methods in extensive, post-disturbance conditions. The theme will be reinforced by a post-fire stop at the former Northwestern Lake on the White Salmon River. This river, which until October 2011 was blocked by Condit Dam, is now free-flowing from Mt. Adams to the Columbia River. People curious about watershed-scale management issues and Pacific Northwest history will benefit from joining this field trip.

Registration Fee: $80

Equipment and Attire: Participants need to dress for a day in the forest. Suggested attire includes a field vest or day pack with personal items like a sun hat, camera, notebook, water bottle, and insect repellant. Boots or stout, high-top shoes are essential, no open-toed shoes will be allowed. Hard hats must be worn when on federal land and will be provided.
