Are you interested in pitching in while in Portland to help restore Johnson Creek, the only free-flowing salmon stream in Portland? SEEDS students have partnered with the Johnson Creek Watershed Council to offer the minds and muscles of a diverse group of ecologists to a highly active local restoration effort. Join us to help restore streamside forests and document the abundance and distribution of native freshwater mussels in Johnson Creek. We’ll start with a tour of the Tideman-Johnson Natural Area, which has been transformed over the past decade from a blackberry-choked hide-out to a popular park and natural area by hundreds of volunteers working with the City of Portland and neighboring landowners. In the morning, we’ll remove invasive ivy and clematis from trees. And, in the afternoon, we’ll wade through the stream searching for Western Pearlshell Mussels among other species using aquascopes. This survey is part of an ongoing effort by the Johnson Creek Watershed Council and the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation to understand freshwater mussel ecology in this urban stream. This field trip will provide an opportunity for mentoring/learning exchange among the diverse participants including: ESA members, SEEDS students, and neighborhood volunteers.

Registration Fee: $33

Equipment and Attire: Participants should wear field clothing appropriate for tromping through weedy areas on steep slopes and wading in the creek – shorts are okay.
