Sunday, August 9, 2015: 12:00 PM-5:00 PM
Peale B, Hilton
Organizer:
Jill P. Parsons, Ecological Society of America
Co-organizers:
William Michener, University of New Mexico; and Clifford Duke, Ecological Society of America
This workshop is designed to meet the needs of ecologists who have an idea that they would like to develop and turn into a business prospectus, a research proposal, or an organization that could be supported by agencies, private foundations, and other sources. The workshop is organized by team members of ESA’s Sustaining Biological Infrastructure (SBI) Training Initiative (www.esa.org/sbi) and will help entrepreneurial scientists accomplish the following:

  • Refine your research project/program/organization ideas using the Kellogg Logic Model
  • Assess the viability of your ideas for obtaining financial support from different sources using the business model canvas
  • Turn your ideas into grant proposals using requirement matrices and other proven approaches

The workshop organizers will lead participants through a series of structured planning and brainstorming exercises aimed at helping them turn their ideas into fundable, successful grant proposals.  We will begin with an overview of logic modeling, and use that approach to generate, refine, and assess ideas that scientists have for their research or interest area.  Next, we will use the business model canvas to further develop a plan for acquiring funding and sustaining the research activity, business, or organization.  Last, we will review and critique proven approaches for developing successful grant proposals.

Registration Fee: $25
