No set of national statistics comprehensively summarizes the environmental state of the nation. This lack of information is troubling for both environmental and economic reasons. The presentation will discuss the ecological, economic, and institutional issues surrounding the development of environmental statistics to inform the public and aide environmental managers in the delivery and enhancement of ecosystem services. Practical examples will be used to illustrate a statistical approach to environmental outcome measurement that is both ecologically and economically sound.
