Nearly 10 years ago, the journal Evolutionary Ecology ran a special issue commemorating 30 years of optimal foraging theory's influence on population and community ecology. These past 10 years have seen a proliferation of empirical and theoretical work justifying the then re-emerging appreciation that foraging behavior, and more generally adaptive behaviour, is critical to understanding the distribution, abundance, dynamics and structure of populations, communities and food webs as ecosystems. We have assembled here a wide range of experts to bring us up to speed on the current integration of adaptive behavior in community ecology, and more importantly, to look forward.
