Background/Question/Methods

How can open source applications enhance data entry and visualization of ecological resources for local communities?

Results/Conclusions
Participatory mapping offers citizen scientists and researchers methods to enter data directly into spatial databases. Open source applications offer advances in web-based mapping and provide interactivity for users at all levels of technical knowledge. Location-specific data can be entered into spatial databases and visualized on web-enabled maps via SMS messaging, email or online forms. This enhances collaboration among multiple users and improves public participation opportunities. An example of how this technology is applied to map bird counts in Fresno, CA is presented. Challenges and future needs are discussed.
