PS 3-41 - Integrated assessment program of student learning outcomes in the biological sciences

Monday, August 8, 2011
Exhibit Hall 3, Austin Convention Center
Clay Runck, School of Science and Technology, Georgia Gwinnett College, Lawrenceville, GA
Background/Question/Methods

Increased attention to continuous assessment of student learning in higher education is driving development of integrated assessment programs that focus not just on student learning in individual courses but also how individual courses contribute to achievement of program and institutional outcome goals. Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) opened its doors in August 2006 and is the newest member of the University System of Georgia. Continuous assessment of course, program, and college-wide goals has been part of the GGC culture from the very beginning. GGC has a well-developed assessment program that uses WEAVEonline© to track outcome data at different levels, from course level to the institution's Ingegrated Educational Experiences (IEE) goals, so that assessment drives course and program revisions and resource allocation.

Results/Conclusions

An overview of GGC's assessment program for the Biology progam will be presented. The focus of the presentation will be on the process of course and program outcome goal assessment, wtih examples of how action plans developed from assessment reports resulted in significant allocation of institutional funds to the Biology program. Challenges managing the assessment program associated with rapid growth in student enrollment and faculty (from 118 students and 10 full-time faculty in August 2006 to 5,480 students and 300 full-time faculty in January 2011) will also be presented.
