In the past decade, many universities and colleges signed the Talloires Declaration and the American University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, committing the schools to serving as models of sustainable development and to reducing their carbon emissions. These schools have hired sustainability coordinators, appointed sustainability committees, developed greenhouse gas inventories and action plans, established organic farms and farm-to-college food procurement policies, developed green curricula, established green building policies, set up green living demonstration housing options, adopted green cleaning policies, and pushed waste reduction well beyond recycling to include reuse and recycled content purchasing policies. Results of a nationwide survey of these initiatives will be presented, followed by an invited panel of campus sustainability coordinators and ecologists who will summarize & critique sustainability initiatives on their campuses. As time allows, audience members will be invited to describe green initiatives on their campuses.
