Graduate student teaching assistants (TAs) are a major influence on undergraduate learning, however, pedagogical training remains rare in the biological sciences. Further, providing training in professional development and pedagogy is becoming a critical element of broader impact programs and graduate training grants. The goal of this workshop is to assist faculty participants in developing TA pedagogical training at their respective universities. Participants will discuss strategies to create engaged, learner-centered classrooms. The workshop organizers will demonstrate a variety of approaches and strategies they have implemented in their own graduate training courses, and will facilitate the process of adaptation of strategies for implementation at participants’ institutions. Participants can expect to spend significant time working together to adapt activities to support the needs of their own institutions. As a result of engaging in workshop activities, participants can expect to leave with ideas for TA training that includes relevant literature and resources on teaching and learning.
