Background/Question/Methods

The Sustainable Agriculture Education Association (SAEA) is a new national membership organization whose mission is to promote and support the development, application, research, and exchange of best teaching and learning practices in sustainable agriculture education. We became an official 501c3 organization in 2008 and our Steering Council is composed of leading educators and graduate students in sustainable agriculture from all over the nation. The main goals of the SAEA are to 1) promote and advocate sustainable agriculture education programs nationwide, 2) promote the exchange of curricula, best educational and experiential learning practices, and research related to the teaching and learning of sustainable agriculture; 3) support public forums and conferences for sustainable agriculture education; 4) serve as a network for individuals and organizations involved in sustainable agriculture education, and 5) support sustainable agriculture educators and students in professional development activities.

Results/Conclusions

The SAEA has grown into a vibrant and inclusive organization of students, faculty and community educators dedicated to the advancement of best teaching and learning practices in sustainable agriculture. Organization milestones include the development of a website (http://sustainableaged.org) that serves as the main resource for listing student farms, as well as national academic programs and internships in sustainable agriculture. We have facilitated four national Sustainable Agriculture Education Conferences hosted in collaboration with UC Davis/UC Santa Cruz (2006), Cornell/PennState (2007), Iowa State (2009) and VTech/U Kentucky (2011), each attended by over 200 individuals. We also maintain a virtual library of resources related to sustainable agriculture education, courses and curricula. Development of a list of sustainable agriculture jobs, internships, and apprenticeships nationwide is currently underway.
