From the Smith and Bybee Wetlands website: "At nearly 2,000 acres, Metro’s Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area is the largest protected wetlands within an American city. This beautiful natural area is one of the region’s best-kept secrets, hiding in a part of Portland surrounded by port terminals, warehouses and other commercial developments. Most visitors to the natural area are surprised to find beaver, river otter, black-tailed deer, osprey, bald eagles and Western painted turtles living only minutes from downtown Portland" A park naturalist will guide us through the wetlands and show us the closed St. Johns landfill-- to look at the water control structure and talk about how the park uses that to control the hydrology, and therefore the habitat, of the lake system. We will explore the wetlands in the morning and be back to the Convention Center by lunch time. For more info on the park: http://www.oregonmetro.gov/index.cfm/go/by.web/id=153
