Co-organizer:
Sunshine L. Brosi, Frostburg State University
Ethnobiology, the study of relationships between peoples and their environments, is a growing, dynamic field which bridges the social and natural sciences to find tangible solutions to the earth’s social and environmental challenges. The Open Science Network in Ethnobiology (OSN) is focused on shaping the educational aspects of this field. As part of an NSF-funded research collaboration network, OSN is connecting faculty members, often isolated within their institutions, with other ethnobiologists to develop educational materials. The Open Science Network is working to develop peer-reviewed curriculum modules that empower educators and students to learn about science through the medium of ethnobiology. The network seeks to effectively engage students in science through the creative use of common technological tools that promote scientific inquiry. An open philosophy approach encourages everyone, regardless of level of experience, to contribute and uses an open-group evaluation model that continues to develop educational resources as they are used and shared through the network www.opensciencenetwork.net. In this workshop we will incorporate research on trends in ethnobiology education over time and information collected on needs of current educators and students within the ethnobiology community. The OSN will share core areas of competencies in ethnobiology education similar to the AAAS Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education. The workshop will demonstrate to faculty members how to engage in the Open Science Network and will teach them ideas and skills to try in their classrooms. Lunch will not be served, bring your own lunch!
