Carbon flux in terrestrial ecosystems is constrained, but by what? Common sense tells us that hot places are limited by heat and cold places by cold and dry places by the dryness, but that may not always be the case. We’ll take a plant’s-eye-view of carbon flux in extreme climates to find out what actually limits productivity when plants are growing and find that the constraints on carbon flux are not always what they seem.
