To help meet the needs of a still-growing and more consuming human population while at the same time protecting the planetary life support systems, ecologists and other scientists are increasingly engaging in use-inspired fundamental research that both improves understanding and helps improve decision making.  Linking such new knowledge with decision makers, however, is a challenging task, one that requires new approaches.  Drawing on a research in an intensive wheat-growing region of Mexico, this talk will explore approaches to bridging the gap between knowledge development and its use by decision makers moving toward more sustainable agricultural practices.
