How quickly does nonstructural carbon (NSC) turnover? There is no simple answer to this question, because there isn’t a single, well-mixed pool. NSC turnover times range from minutes to a decade and longer, depending on where it is allocated. More recently assimilated NSC is preferentially used, but stored NSC, sometimes many years old, can be accessed if needed.  Understanding the allocation and turnover time of NSC in different processes of growth, metabolism, and storage is needed to improve carbon cycling in ecosystem models.  This presentation will discuss how long NSC resides in long-lived woody plants using isotopic approaches.
