Inform your teaching with data, just as you do your research. There are many more formats for assessing student learning than just multiple choice and essay/short answer questions. I will show you how to use scientific practices to engage students in learning core concepts and assess them accordingly, both in and outside an active learning class. I will discuss the advantage of using models and arguments to design alternate forms of assessment that provide substantive feedback to you and students about their learning. Importantly, you will not need excessive amounts of time to score your exams!
