Many philanthropic organizations do more than just give out money.  Some, in fact, liken their work as "changemaking." Changemaking philanthropies make grants but also focus heavily on fostering connectivity and collectivity among key scientists, other stakeholders, and policymakers.  I’ll reflect on the challenges and fun inherent to devising and carrying out boundary-spanning strategy for Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Marine Conservation Initiative.  At our best, we help connect policy-relevant science to agents for change to achieve sustainable fisheries and ocean management.  (At our worst, we are just another vector in the buzzword pandemic!)
