Background/Question/Methods

Screencasts are digital recordings of computer activity and are an effective education tool that offer great versatility. Instructional applications include step-by-step tutorials, demonstrations and narrated presentations and screencasts can be augmented with photos, videos and music to create a sophisticated multimedia, engaging learning experience.  With so many options available, sometimes scaling back can be the best approach.

Results/Conclusions

We provide a step-by-step process for creating screencast tutorials, including identification of appropriate software, workflow process, timeline and technical audio/video considerations. We also present community survey results used to inform development of DataONE screencasts in order to provide a framework for best practices in material development.
