We have organized a session which captures current developments associated with contributions of social-ecological system approaches to producing food products under changing environmental conditions. The speakers have been selected to cover topics of which provide insights on the human appropriation of net primary productivity, vulnerability and risk aspects of food production systems, key considerations of social-ecological dimensions of food production systems, and the diversity of knowledge systems associated with these systems, ranging from highly technological ones to those incorporating local knowledge of the social ecological system. This selection of speakers provides a cross-cut of domestic and international perspectives dealing with a diversity of food production practices. In addition, several of the speakers have direct collaboration with food producing corporations which are exploring sustainable sourcing practices of the primary raw materials. The development of indicators, metrics for evaluating social-ecological trade-offs, and typology of knowledge systems is providing useful tools for business leaders and ecologists to co-develop sustainable food production practices for the growing population around the world.
