Field Sampling Methods for the National Vegetation Classification (CANCELLED)

This session will be a hands-on instructional field workshop in setting up plots and collecting data for the purpose of floristic classification of vegetation, including minimum requirements for the U.S. National Vegetation Classification (http://usnvc.org/). While the workshop will be suitable for beginners, more advanced logistical considerations will be covered. The workshop will be held in upland and floodplain forests in Patapsco Falls State Park, along of Atlantic Fall Line gorges in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Familiarity with local vegetation is helpful, but not required; instructors will assist with plant identification.

Equipment and Attire: Clothes suitable for outdoor field work (e.g., long pants) and sturdy walking shoes should be worn. A day pack for personal outdoor gear is recommended. Bring rain gear, water, and sun protection (hat, sun screen). Exposure to poison ivy and stinging/biting insects is possible; repellants are recommended. Walking distances will be minimal (up to 1/4 mile total walking), but exercises will be conducted off trails and occasionally on moderately steep hillsides.
