Have a great idea? Wonderful! Now comes the ugly truth: 99% of successful grant writing has nothing to do with inspiration. My talk will cover all the aspects of grant writing you never learned in graduate school: from the 'hard' skills like reading the directions (carefully! yes, every line) and understanding your university's Byzantine budget worksheet, to the 'soft' skills like getting to know your program officer (that thing on your desk called a phone, use it!) and building a coalition of collaborators, this talk will cover the highlights and lowlights of getting your research funded.
