iNaturalist is a free, open source database of species observations throughout the world. Anyone can record their observations, share observations with fellow naturalists, and discuss observations to confirm, dispute, or further species identification. Observations ideally include community supported identification at the species or lower taxonomic level, a date, a georeference, photos or sounds, and is an observation of a wild or naturalized organism. iNaturalist provided a powerful tool for Rocky Mountain Sustainability and Science Network (RMSSN) students to contribute to the collection of species presence data for a large-scale data collection event.
