Federated data repositories such as the Data Observation Network for Earth and participating Member Nodes provide access to ever increasing volumes of diverse data. Access to such a wealth of data provides great opportunity for retrospective and meta analyses drawing conclusions from potentially hundreds of data sets. Getting those data into an analysis environment and keeping track of selections, transformations and other processing is important not only for improving efficiency of analytical piplines, but also when sharing work with colleagues. This process is greatly simplified through the sensible adoption of standards for data access and provenance tracking.
