Global awareness on environmental issues has fostered the need for easily accessible sources of high quality information. There is ample space between highly specialized scientific journals, and fast-consuming literature, a space that is being filled by journals combining a high degree of scientific rigor, and understandable and attractive formats. ECOSISTEMAS (www.revistaecosistemas.net), the online peer-reviewed journal of the Spanish Association for Terrestrial Ecology aims at providing updated information on ecology and environmental issues to a broad Spanish-speaking audience. First appeared in 2001 in its current free-access format, it has gained increasing popularity. Today, ECOSISTEMAS receive an average of +1,500 visitors daily, most of them (70%) from Latin American countries and the USA. Over the last years, ECOSISTEMAS Editorial Committee has developed successful strategies to encourage its use as an online educational tool for secondary school and undergraduate students.
