Land remote sensing data can be effectively used by ecologists to understand ecosystem dynamics and to expand site measurements to larger scales. These data can be used to improve our understanding of processes occurring on land and in the lower atmosphere, and play a vital role tin the development of global interactive Earth system models used to predict global change. However, most remote sensing products require special knowledge and software packages to extract information useful for ecologists. This workshop will focus on NASA’s MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) which views the Earth’s surface every 2 to 8 days, collecting data in 36 spectral bands. Land Products generated from MODIS include land surface temperature, reflectance, vegetation indices, phenology, land cover, albedo, and photosynthesis. This workshop will cover tools developed by NASA’s ORNL DAAC for Biogeochemical Dynamics. The first tool –MODIS Land Products Subsetting and Visualization Tool -- produces time series data at a scale and format useful for field investigations. The second tool –Spatial Data Access Tool—allows users to find, access, and download user defined spatial data. Users can select time period, spatial extent, format, resolution, and projection for their own customized requirements. In addition, a tool for discovery of environmental and ecological data will be demonstrated. The target audience is graduate students, post-docs, and researchers who would like to use remote sensing data to complement the information collected during field studies. Faculty members who would like to include exercises on use of remote sensing in their curricula are encouraged to attend.
