Organizer:
Clifford Duke, Ecological Society of America
Last year’s ESA meeting featured two special sessions on the environmental impacts of war, one featuring a discussion of warfare ecology with Dr. Gary Machlis, and one a showing of the documentary film “Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives: The Environmental Footprint of War.” Dr. Machlis has organized a NATO Advanced Research Workshop, “Warfare Ecology: Synthesis, Priorities and Policy Implications for Peace and Security” in Vieques, Puerto Rico, December 9-13, 2009, in which Dr. Duke is participating. The proposed special session will continue the conversation about this important topic that began in 2009, with screening of new material from “Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives” and a discussion of issues raised at the NATO workshop. Lincoln and Alice Day, producers of the documentary, and Dr. Machlis will be invited to speak at the session.
