With global warming the ecosystem services of water provision can become precarious. Droughts in some places are predicted to become deeper and more frequent, threatening agriculture and domestic supplies. Coupled with human population growth and the intensification and spread of urbanization, droughts that in the past would have been brief and manageable can become catastrophes of regional proportions. Failure to prepare for such events has already pitted jurisdictions against one another, and conflicts are set to become more rancorous. In addition, the vulnerabilities to drought and the disruptions it can cause have a tendency to be visited on marginalized populations, impoverished communities, and communities of color. This workshop will present videos of several case studies illustrating the limits, inequities, and opportunities that surround the occurrence and management of drought in a increasingly warmer world. These case studies were originally presented at the ESA’s Millennium Conference, and the workshop provides the opportunity for the case study authors to present their work and the process of making the videos to a larger audience. The videos will be will introduced by insights from the Millennium Conference concerning drought, water ecosystem services, and environmental justice in the context of global warming. The case study authors will be present to discuss their work and answer questions. In addition, the mechanics of planning and producing a video case study will be shared with workshop attendees by members of ESAs Student Section, which has experience with video strategy and technology.
