Get first-hand experience with effective strategies for working with K-12 teachers from the Culturally Relevant Ecology: Learning Progressions and Environmental Literacy Math Science Partnership project. Working with hundreds of teachers and thousands of students at four Long Term Ecological Research sites around the nation, we have constructed learning progressions that describe pathways towards model-based reasoning about key ideas in environmental science. Three overarching topics are included: 1) carbon and climate change; 2) biodiversity and evolution; and 3) water quantity, quality and flow. Each is complemented with support for engaging students in place-based learning, quantitative reasoning and citizenship practices. Instructional materials and professional development strategies have been pilot-tested and refined that provide teachers with the building blocks needed for what we term “learning progression-based teaching strategies.”
Workshop participants will: 1) engage in several of the activities we have found to be successful in workshops with teachers across the nation, helping them pay attention and respond to their students’ thinking and build deeper understanding; 2) discover what research says about student and teacher learning of “big ideas” in environmental science; 3) receive pilot versions of two Learning Progressions and Environmental Literacy Guides, one for Professional Development Leaders and one for Teachers; 4) consider ways to incorporate these new strategies and resources into their own professional development work with teachers; and 5) form a community of K-12 professional development leaders within ESA to plan and carry out continued collaborative work in the future.
Lunch will not be served, bring your own lunch!
