We are often not aware of the cognitive scaffolds that allow us to understand what we understand:  our current frame of reference is often the result of years of refining our mental frameworks for how we approach a given issue.  Would you be able to reconstruct how you got to your current understanding about population ecology?  Awareness of such epistemological issues may equip you with the skills necessary to communicate your science to difference audiences.  The mind is a wonderful thing to waste, but it is also a difficult thing to “reprogram” and “reframe”.
