Making science help make change is the hallmark of use-inspired ecological research in Micronesia. Over 20 years of research in the ridges-to-reefs ecosystems have yielded tangible outcomes in some places including recovery of the reef fish/invertebrate populations (particularly species of interest for human consumption) and trophic assemblages, improved management, community engagement and reduction in sediment run-off into estuarine areas. This Ignite presentation highlights keys to success: 1) interweaving a research agenda with nuanced culturally appropriate communications, 2) a long-term and pragmatic vision for implementing lasting policy change, and 3) interdisciplinary research that socializes scientific results so they can catalyze change.
