If we want science that can create real change, we need scientists doing use-inspired research. This then means that we need to train graduate students to envision and implement interdisciplinary, use-inspired ecological research. Stanford University's Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER) develops students’ knowledge, skills, perspectives, and ways of thinking so that they can understand and help solve the world’s most significant environmental and resource sustainability challenges. This Ignite presentation draws on examples of students doing use-inspired ecological research and calls for an interdisciplinary paradigm in graduate training.
