We face two critical difficulties in achieving meaningful solutions to environmental problems. The first is the issue of access and interpretation of critical information. The second is a lack of understanding of the role and use of scientific information in policy-making.  Both hinder effective participation and reasonable outcomes in policy-making. Developing and incorporating class activities that require students to access, interpret and present critical information to stakeholders in need can improve both.  Such an approach facilitates student engagement, fosters learning, creates understanding of science in policy, and prepares students for non-academic careers that use ecology.
