All land is not created equal. Cities host polluting industries that degrade the environment and devalue adjacent communities. All too often, marginalized communities live and work on this derelict land. Poor soils, poor people. This is unjust ground. With experience in this complicated territory through design practice at D.I.R.T. studio and via research with students at University of Virginia, Julie Bargmann will rapidly provoke ideas about deploying holistic design approaches. These interdisciplinary collaborations are dependent upon field-verified science to create healthy social infrastructure. Successful ones hold promise to redefine abandoned landscapes gone to seed as vital to contemporary culture.
