Networking is often treated as a dirty word by those in fields where what you know, not who you know, is the gold standard. Ancient scientists recognized the importance of being connected to peers, mentors and sponsors. In rejection of "schmoozing" reminiscent of the business world, networking for success in science becomes almost invisible. Elevating networking skills to the visible realm can help overcome the myth of the lonely pursuit of truth. Strategic networking opens doors to new research ideas, collaborations, funding, jobs, greater career satisfaction and makes science more welcoming for people from different backgrounds.
